The June 23 - 26 summit climb summited this morning around 7:30! Everyone on the climb made it to the top on this gorgeous, summer day!
RMI guide, Eryka Thorley said they left Camp Muir this morning with a full moon in the sky to brighten their climb. The snow had firmed up just enough for great climbing over night and there was light wind on an otherwise warm morning on Rainier. There are a couple of crevasses starting to open high on the route that teams are avoiding. While the route continues to be in stellar shape, Eryka says that there was a bit of a traffic jam on the upper mountain today. With this awesome weather that we've had, it's no wonder everyone was trying to summit today! On top, the climbers had fantastic views in all directions with a low cloud layer sitting in the Ashford valley. After a quick stop at Camp Muir on their way back down, the climb traveled down the Muir Snowfield. Eryka said that up high on the Snowfield the snow was punchy and slushy. Climbers were post-holing and traveling downhill was a little difficult; however, as they lost more and more elevation the snow conditions changed to corn snow and the walking became much easier.
